U.S. Marshals, who had tracked a homicide suspect from the Florida Panhandle to Tampa, opened fire on the man outside a hotel this morning, after he drew a handgun on officers, authorities said.

Thomas Ford McCoy was wanted in connection with a homicide in DeFuniak Springs less than two weeks ago, federal officials said.

The U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force tracked him to the Holiday Inn Express on Busch Boulevard in Tampa this morning, where they waited outside.

Authorities said that McCoy, 42, walked out of the hotel room and was spotted by deputy marshals who ordered him to the ground. He started to comply, officials said, but then drew a handgun. He was shot in the shoulder and buttocks and taken to an undisclosed hospital where he was treated for the wounds.

His condition was unknown this afternoon.

Marshals said that the truck McCoy drove from the Panhandle was recovered, although it had been spray painted a different color.
