Tenoroc high student hit by car dies

A Tenoroc High School student died Tuesday evening after being struck by a car as he walked home from school Tuesday afternoon.

Colton Meyers, 14, died at Tampa General Hospital, where he had been airlifted, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Just after 2 p.m., Meyers was walking home from school when he was struck by car driven by 17-year-old Jamiell Russell Jack, who is also a student at Tenoroc High, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The accident occurred just after 2 p.m. as Meyers was walking eastbound across Old Dixie Highway just a few hundred feet from his home.

Jack was traveling south on Old Dixie Highway in a Nissan when he tried to pass a car as he approached Taylor Street, the sheriff's office said.

Jack's car struck Meyers near the east edge of the northbound lane of Old Dixie Highway, the sheriff's office said.

Meyers ended in a ditch across from his neighbor's home.

After the accident, Jack remained at the scene. The case remains under investigation.
