The Family Justice Center of Hillsborough County has been awarded a $200,000 federal grant to help victims of domestic violence.
"This funding, along with current funding, will allow us to continue to serve families impacted by domestic violence," Nikki Daniels, the center's executive director, said in a written statement.
"It is especially meaningful for this announcement to come during the holiday season. Many of us look forward to time spent with family, sharing laughs and love. For some, the threat of violence does not go away, even during this special time of year."
More than 113,000 domestic violence cases were reported statewide in 2008, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Of those, 7,800 were in Hillsborough County.
The Family Justice Center provides legal services, counseling, child care, emergency transportation, financial assistance and relocation, among other resources. Twenty-seven agencies are located at the Family Justice Center, offering victims one stop to find a specific service they need.
The agency at 9309 N. Florida Ave. opened in 2006 and has served more than 5,000 families.
The grant was announced today by U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor. The funding was included in the fiscal year 2010 appropriations bill signed by President Barack Obama.
