A Hillsborough County sheriff's detective was taken to a hospital this afternoon after his unmarked car was involved in a crash with a BMW and a Mercedes-Benz.
Detective Kevin Cooper had minor injuries after the 4:04 p.m. crash at 2310 N. Falkenburg Road, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. The crash happened in front of the sheriff's District 2 office in Brandon.
A 2000 BMW driven by Ryan Thomas, 29, of Valrico, pulled out of a turn lane, Carter said. Thomas tried to drive around the 2005 Mercedes in front of him, but instead struck the front of Cooper's car, which was going north on Falkenburg Road, Carter said.
The impact caused Thomas' BMW to spin and strike the Mercedes. Thomas and the driver of the Mercedes, Meloney Lawrence, 47, of Lithia, refused medical attention, Carter said.
Traffic tickets were issued to Thomas.
