A longtime Shriners official from St. Petersburg was recently elected to become the highest-ranking member in the world.

Jack H. Jones was elected Imperial Potentate - a title equal to president and chief executive officer - of Shriners International during an annual convention this month in San Antonio, Texas.

Jones will serve a one-year term as chairman of the board of directors for the Shriners International fraternity and Shriners Hospitals for Children, an international health care system.

The organization has 350,000 members worldwide.

Jones has served on the board of directors as Imperial Recorder since 1979. In that position, he was a liaison to other Masonic-related organizations. Jones has worked as the director of membership and Masonic relations at Shriners International Headquarters in Tampa since 1981.

Jones is affiliated with other Masonic organizations in the Tampa Bay area, and in 2006 he was given the Imperial Potentate's Award of Merit, the fraternity's highest honor.
