A Hillsborough County deputy was dragged this morning by a vehicle driven by a Hillsborough County substitute teacher, Hillsborough County deputies say.
Deputy John Duran, 40, was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released.
Substitute teacher David Oliver Muslin, 31, of 4102 W. Knights Ave. in Tampa, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, obstructing or opposing an officer and fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement.
About 3 a.m. today, deputies were responding to a fight call at the Green Iguana, 9202 Anderson Road, when they learned of another fight at Waters and Anderson.
Several people told deputies Muslin was the instigator, and Duran tried to arrest Muslin, deputies say.
"Muslin then got into the driver's seat of a 2007 Jeep that was parked nearby and refused lawful commands by Deputy Duran to exit his vehicle," a sheriff's office news release states. "Deputy Duran attempted to detain Muslin by removing him from his vehicle, when Muslin put the car in gear and sped off trapping the deputy's hand and body against the vehicle and dragging him approximately 20 feet.
Deputy Duran was able to free himself from the moving car and fell onto the pavement."
Muslin left the scene but was arrested a half-mile away, deputies say.
Muslin has worked for the school district since January, serving as a substitute teacher at several schools, district spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said. He has worked as a substitute in physical education classes as well as in computer laboratories and libraries.
Muslin had been slated to teach physical education today at Lake Magdalene Elementary, Cobbe said.
Following the arrest, he was removed from a list of possible substitute teachers "depending on the outcome of the situation," she said.
Muslin remains in Orient Road Jail today. His bail is set at $19,500.
