A man suffering from low blood sugar drove his F-150 pickup truck off the Pinellas Bayway bridge Thursday night, St. Petersburg fire officials said.
The vehicle slammed into a guardrail, catapulting 40 to 50 feet in the air and over the heads of fishermen before plunging into knee-deep water in the Intracoastal Waterway, fire officials said.
The man's identity was not available, said Lt. Joel Granata, spokesman for St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue. After the 10:30 p.m. incident, which occurred on a bridge that approaches the Don CeSar Beach Resort, he was taken to a local hospital.
