Lawmakers eye agreement on Dec. special session

Florida's Republican legislative leaders say they're looking at a special session on commuter and high speed rail issues beginning next week.

In separate statements Friday, Senate President Jeff Atwater of North Palm Beach and House Speaker Larry Cretul of Ocala told members to be ready to pass legislation that would create a new passenger rail system in central Florida and persuade Congress to help the state pay for a high speed rail system.

Cretul and Atwater told lawmakers to plan on dealing with the issue beginning Dec. 3.

The proposal would also include money for the distressed Tri Rail system in South Florida.

Gov. Charlie Crist also supports a session to deal with the issue.
