Hillsborough County sheriff's divers on a training dive Tuesday next to the Maple Lane Bridge across the Tampa Bypass Canal found 11 motorcycle frames and two motorcycle engines at the bottom of the canal just north of the Interstate 4 bridge.
Sheriff's spokesman Larry McKinnon said that four of the frames had engines still attached. He said the frames and engines that could be identified were reported stolen between July 2007 and December from Temple Terrace and St. Petersburg.
The makes and models of the bike booty were unavailable.
"The dive team randomly searches canals and waterways," he said. "It gives them a chance to practice and keeps them sharp. It's very hazardous. Plus, you never know what you're going to find."
In the past, divers on training dives around the county have found everything from shopping carts to safes to old guns, he said.
"It's a flea market of items," he said.
