Miss America 2009, Katie Stam, visited Tampa Bay today, including America's Second Harvest, in support of Hunger Awareness Month and the 3rd Annual Lucky Ducky Derby, taking place on Oct. 25 to raise funds for the food bank.

She is also scheduled to visit H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute this afternoon, and will make a public appearance in the plaza outside the St. Pete Times Forum before heading indoors to make an on-ice appearance at the Tampa Bay Lightning Game tonight.

"As the economy has worsened over the past year, the need for food keeps escalating," Pat Rogers, director of the food bank, said in a statement before Stam's appearance. "For the 10 counties we serve, every 1 percent change in unemployment means there is a need for 2.5 million more pounds of food for the hungry," Rogers said.

America's Second Harvest of Tampa Bay provides food for an estimated 102,744 different people annually, 35,581 different people receive assistance in any given week, the organization said.

Stam is on a national speaking tour promoting the Miss America Organization and her personal platform of Community Service. She is also the Goodwill Ambassador for Children's Miracle Network and visits children's hospitals across North America.
