A 16-year-old high school cheerleader was seriously injured tonight during a Powder Puff football game, Hernando County Fire Rescue said.
The Nature Coast High School student collided with another girl during the game and suffered a head injury, Assistant Fire Chief Frank DeFrancesco said.
The girl was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.
Powder Puff is a football game where the cheerleaders play football while the football players act as cheerleaders.
The fire department received a call at 8:25 p.m. that there was a girl unresponsive from a football accident, DeFrancesco said.
DeFrancesco said he didn't know if the girls were playing tag football or tackle or if they were wearing protective equipment.
He described the girl as being in serious condition.
