Corn. What's fun about corn? Save for popcorn, or maybe candy corn, there's just not much to get excited about. That is, until you plant seven acres of it and build yourself a labyrinth.
That's just what the crew at Long & Scott Farms in Zellwood has done with their 2009 fall corn maze.
Each year, they pick a new theme to construct their "maize" maze around. This time, it's all about weather effects on farms.
Navigators receive a game card at the entrance of the maze that's loaded with clues - the answers to which can be found as you complete the winding wonder. The labyrinth can take up to two hours to get through, but there's also a smaller one acre version for the little ones.
"People love it because it's challenging and educational," says Anna Sciarrino with Scott's Maze Adventures. "We've provided a space where families can relax with their kids and get time away from the TV and video games; enjoy some fresh air."
When asked about attendance in this record-breaking heat, she said that even she was surprised by the strong early turnout. "We always see more people in November, or as soon as temperatures get down in the eighties. We had over 22,000 visitors last year, and the numbers in the cooler weather usually make up for the heat in the beginning."
The maze, which is in its seventh year, has been drawn out on graph paper and cut by hand in years past. "This time," says Sciarrino, "we used a GPS and a riding mower - we got it done much, much faster."
