A judge today denied bail for rape suspect Joseph Lee Frye, saying he was a danger to the community.
Frye, who led police on a six-day manhunt, is accused of overpowering an elderly woman Aug. 28, raping her in the bedroom of her Seminole Heights home and fleeing with her gun, cash and jewelry.
Circuit Judge Eric R. Myers refused to release Frye after a hearing today that took less than two minutes to conduct. Myers said based on the charges and Frye's criminal history, that he was a danger to the community.
A tip Thursday led authorities to the Mayflower Motel, 7510 N. Florida Ave., near Seminole Heights, where Frye was arrested. The convicted rapist had been out of prison since Aug. 1.
Frye is charged with three counts of armed sexual battery and single counts of robbery, burglary and battery of a person over 65.
Police got a pass key to the room they believed Frye was staying. Frye had his hand on the doorknob as police started to enter. Police said they pushed the door in, and Frye gave up without incident.
Police recovered a .357-caliber magnum and other property they said Frye stole from a rape victim, who is in her 70s.
Frye was convicted of raping a woman at gunpoint in 1985. Police also investigated another rape accusation in 2002, but charges were never filed in the case.
