A woman who was abused for years as a child will be in Tampa today, part of a 500-mile walk to raise awareness of sexual abuse.
Lauren Book-Lim also is walking to bring attention to several victims-rights bills she is backing in the Florida Legislature.
Her walk began April 2 in Ventura; Tampa is the halfway point. The walk will end April 20 in Tallahassee.
Today's events include a welcome rally at Alpha House Marshall Student Center at the University of South Florida, and stops at the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay and a candlelight vigil at 6:30 p.m., also at the Marshall Student Center.
Book-Lim, the daughter of Miami lobbyist Ron Book, was abused by a nanny while growing up. Her walk to raise awareness of physical and sexual assault victims has been endorsed by many state and local politicians, along with athletes such as Miami Heat star Dwayne Wade.
"I want people of all ages to understand that it is OK to tell someone about abuses that have happened to them," Book-Lim said in a release. "I want people to see me walking, dealing with my ghosts and think, 'I can face this.'"
