A Gulfport police sergeant was slightly injured this afternoon when the sport utility vehicle she was sitting in was rammed by someone driving a stolen car, police said.
Sgt. Mary Farrand was taken to an area hospital for minor injuries following the incident at Ninth Avenue South and 58th Street, Gulfport police said.
The incident began after police spotted a Toyota Avalon that had been reported stolen. Farrand, who was driving a Ford Expedition, positioned herself behind the stolen car at Ninth Avenue South and 58th Street, but as she was communicating with other officers via radio, the driver of the Toyota threw the gear into reverse, hit the accelerator, and rammed the Expedition twice before driving off, police said.
At the time, there were no other officers in the area, so there was no pursuit.
The Toyota has a Florida license plate number of L406EM, and was last seen heading east on Central Avenue from 58th Street.
Officers from Gulfport and St. Petersburg are looking for the car. Anyone with information is asked to call the Gulfport police department at 727-893-1030.
