A vehicle crashed through a house where seven children were sleeping early Sunday morning, leaving a 9-year-old boy with a fractured skull.
Joseph Vanhouse is in good condition in the intensive care unit at St. Joseph's Hospital, according to the Tampa Police Department.
Just after midnight, 17-year-old Guillermo Rosales ran a stop sign, plowed through a yard and into a house at 7910 N. Orleans Ave., police said.
The 2002 Ford he was driving smashed through a wall and continued through the house, pushing the couch on which Vanhouse was sleeping 25 feet through the home, then under a table, said Susan Baxter-Dunning, an owner of the home.
By the time the truck stopped, the boy was beneath it, she said.
The damage could have been much worse, she said. At times, there are more children sleeping in the section of the house the truck crashed, Baxter-Dunning said. The boy's 4-year-old sister had been asleep in a chair that was smashed by the truck before her mother took her to bed.
The truck also missed an oak and a utility pole in the front yard.
Rosales, of 13931 Henson Circle in Tampa, went to St. Joseph's Hospital with minor injuries, police said. Investigators are waiting for the results of toxicology tests before deciding whether to charge him.
