Nearly a dozen families evacuated their homes this morning after a sinkhole opened in their condominium complex's parking lot, near the University of South Florida campus.
The sinkhole was reported at 6:09 a.m. today, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Chief Frank Fernandez said.
The Tampa Bay Chapter of the American Red Cross is helping four of the families find temporary housing.
Eleven of the building's 12 units were occupied, and emergency officials cut off utilities to the building.
The hole swallowed a Toyota Camry, which was still visible when a deputy arrived but had disappeared by the time firefighters got there a few minutes later, Fernandez said.
The sinkhole at the Bordeaux Village Condominiums, 12701 N. 50th St., is about 20 feet wide, 10 feet deep and is continuing to grow, Fernandez said.
The families will be out of their homes until the sinkhole stabilizes. The condominium association has called in a company to stabilize the hole.
