On St. Armands Circle in Sarasota, talk of oil in the Gulf is bad for business, no matter who is saying it. And lately, there's been a lot of talk.
But on Friday, the talk shifted to optimism on news BP had capped the well and the fix appeared to be holding.
Tourist David Emmett said he checked several websites before departing Ireland to make sure oil was not soiling the beaches. Now, Emmett is using the Internet to tell people back home that the threat has subsided.
"I've already had e-mails from friends back over in Ireland asking me if there's any oil on the beaches here and I'm just saying 'no,' " Emmett said. "They're coming out in a couple of months and they'll be here."
At Cha Cha Coconuts, manager Carol Bonella said stopping the gusher should improve turnout.
"It's a relief for everybody," Bonella said. "Not just in Florida, but for everybody.
Though any good news about the Gulf disaster is welcome, Toronto resident Debbie Davis said she is waiting to see whether the fix will hold.
"The proof will be in the pudding ... I think we need to be optimistic, but not jump to conclusions," she said.
