Papua New Guinea quake stirs tsunami fears

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Indonesia says it has lifted a tsunami warning issued after powerful quake hit off neighboring Papua New Guinea.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 and was centered 325 miles northeast of the Pacific island's capital, Port Morseby. It struck 35 miles beneath the ocean floor.

Fauzi, who heads Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency, says his country warned that the temblor had the potential to trigger a tsunami. Like many Indonesians, he uses one name.

But he said the alert was lifted after it was clear the threat had passed.
