The head of the Tampa Convention Center resigned today, citing health reasons.
John Moors, who took over the reins of the center in 2000, said he will miss the job.
"I had a marvelous time working for the city and the facility," he said. "The staff is fabulous, second to none."
Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio said Moors has done "an outstanding job for the convention center and the city."
"Things have constantly gotten better under his watch,'' Iorio said.
Moors cited a "personal medical condition" as the reason for resigning. His resignation takes effect Monday.
"I need to look after that condition and get myself well,' he said. "I hope to rejoin (the area's professional community) in some capacity."
Moors didn't elaborate on his health.
Reviews of his annual evaluations show he uniformly earned "outstanding" ratings in all categories.
Moors worked for various hotel companies before taking over as the city's administrator of convention facilities and tourism.
He said his mission was to establish a "hotel feel" at the center. He added a front desk and had employees wear nametags. He said he worked to unify the various government and private employees who worked at the center.
Under his watch the center went from hosting local events to competing for national ones.
"We can now compete with cities across the country that we couldn't before," he said.
