The Lakeland SPCA is offering low-cost adoptions as it competes for $100,000 in a national contest.
The organization at 5850 Brannen Road South is one of 46 shelters competing for the prize for the most adoptions. The ASPCA is offering the cash.
The local SPCA, or Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, has adopted out more than 350 dogs and cats since Aug. 1. Its goal is more than 1,150 adoptions by the time the competition ends Oct. 31.
"We're just crossing our fingers, adopting out as many animals as we can, finding loving, forever homes for them and hoping that we're right up there with whoever is doing the same thing," spokeswoman Rachel Bulman said.
To find more homes, the SPCA has reduced adoption fees for all cats and large dogs. Cat adoption fees are $15 and that fee is reduced to $5 for cats that are more than 7 years old or for adopters who are more than 60 years old. Any dog weighing more than 30 pounds can be adopted for $60.
Shelley Richardson, who works in the SPCA intake area, said the organization wants each animal to end up in a loving home.
"We don't want to push an animal on any one. We want to make sure the right animal goes home with the right family so they don't come back, they have a long lifetime in a good home," she said.
If the Lakeland SPCA wins the $100,000, it has a lot of plans for the money, including establishing a dog park.
The Lakeland shelter is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
