Surrounded by the shade of recycled-paper umbrellas as she stood in a galvanized metal tub filled with water, Tracey Midulla Reller managed to keep her cool today during a hot lunch hour.
Somehow, her set-up in the parking lot at Twiggs and North Franklin streets downtown didn't look out of place - at least not next to five adjacent parking spots filled with art displays, including an open origami house and a larger-than-life recycled wood horse.
"We knew it was going to be hot and it was going to be sunny," said Midulla Reller of the "Pool Party Potluck Picnic" exhibit, designed by the alternative-art collective Tempus Projects.
All six exhibits were a part of PARK(ing) Day 2010, an annual, worldwide event designed to inspire urban dwellers to make parking spots into temporary parks. The spaces were donated by 717 Parking Enterprises.
Only one group bombed in its efforts to make Tampa greener.
Actually, they "seed-bombed."
The group from the Prodigy Cultural Arts Program filled biodegradable balloons with helium and native wildflower seeds and released them into the sky, hoping to start blooms all over the area.
The PARK(ing) Day exhibits will stay up until 7 p.m. today, and then the party moves to Fly Bar and Restaurant, 1202 N. Franklin St., from 6 to 11 p.m. The bar will keep its happy hour specials through the night and patrons can look at highlights from the event.
