State employee Robert Delgado missed the luncheon where he was named employee of the quarter in this region.
He had a prior commitment. That afternoon he was attending an award ceremony at which his wife, Marilyn, was named a finalist for Instructional Support Employee of the Year from the Hillsborough Education Foundation.
It turns out he still had an honor - and another luncheon - awaiting him.
Three days later, he was named employee of the year for the Florida Department of Transportation's District 7, which includes the Tampa Bay area.
Delgago said he was surprised when he was named employee of the quarter, much less employee of the year.
"When I came up to get the award, I said, 'Ya'all got the wrong guy up here.'"
Delgado has worked eight years as an auto mechanic for the department, taking care of its trucks, cars and other equipment. He worked in vehicle maintenance for Hillsborough County prior to that.
Marilyn, who was one of five finalists but didn't win the top award, has spent a total of 22 years with the school district. Her career includes as secretary to Principal Susan Raburn at Lincoln Elementary Magnet School for four years, and for Raburn at Cork Elementary School the preceding nine years.
The Delgados, who have two adults sons, moved to Plant City in 1991 from Tampa, where both were born and raised.
"We like it out here," he said. "We like the people and the area."
