Deals on shipping make Amazon.com an appealing site for furnishing a college dorm.
That's one of the tips from the panel of experts at this week's Free & Cheap webcast.
You'll also learn that you might not need to buy special sheets for those odd-sized dorm beds after all, that cork board will help preserve dorm walls and save you your deposit, and that the worst time to apply for a credit card is at those back-to-school fairs.
Watch the video to learn more, and consider these added tips for students headed to college in the next few weeks:
- Amazon.com offers free two-day shipping for one year with Amazon Prime to students with a university email address. This is good for ordering textbooks and, of course, snacks. Amazon buys back textbooks, even if the university won't.
- For decorating the walls, look for adhesive décor (initials, flowers, logos) at places such as Target, Steinmart and Kohl's. You won't have to do a lot of spackling or pay for damages when the kids move out – it peels right off.
- The closer you get to the start of school, the cheaper dorm supplies cost online and in the stores. Target.com is running a sale this week, some items with free shipping.
- Don't forget consignment shops for items such as lamps, cooking ware and glasses.
- Apple offers student discounts on some computers. Also, if you buy a Mac for college, you get $100 discount on apps.
- Studentuniverse.com is a good site to check airfares. Reminder: Always be careful with airfare sites because many times the airline site has good deal.
- Another way to avoid shipping costs: At Bed Bath & Beyond, you can order locally and your child can pick it up at store near their college.
