For the second day in a row, strong thunderstorms are sweeping in off the Gulf of Mexico, packing dangerous lightning, heavy rain and gusty winds.
Some of those storms have brought the two-day rainfall total to near 8 inches in some locations, said Richard Rude, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Ruskin.
And even more is on the way.
"There is still some heavy stuff in the Gulf," Rude said. "We could see another round of heavier rainfall maybe toward noontime or in the early afternoon. There may be some breaks, but it will probably continue until at least mid-afternoon."
After the daylong deluge Tuesday, the rain chance is at 70 percent today.
Some parts of the region were drenched by more than 4 inches of rain on Tuesday, according to radar estimates from the National Weather Service. The heaviest rains fell in northwestern Hillsborough, southwestern Pasco and northeast Pinellas.
At Tampa International Airport, 2.97 inches of rain fell.
The stormy and rainy conditions have been triggered by a westerly wind, along with high pressure to the south and low pressure to the north, forecasters said.
After today, the rain chance should drop down into the more normal 30 percent to 40 percent range for the period Thursday through the weekend.
