TAMPA Wielding hand-held signs, roughly a dozen supporters of the Egyptian uprising gathered on a corner at Dale Mabry Highway and Kennedy Boulevard today
One sign read, "Revolution is Great," another, "Freedom," and another, "Keep Going Egyptians."
More than 70 people have been killed since Egyptians took to the streets five days ago, demanding the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak. The movement comes after years of frustration over what is perceived as a corrupt and heavy-handed government.
Ahmed Bedier, a civil rights activist once associated with the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, was one of those who congregated at the Tampa intersection.
"We're moved by what's happening in Egypt, the Egyptian people's demand for freedom and reform and change against torture and tyranny," said Bedier, an Egyptian-American. "We're so moved by it that we decided to send a clear message to the people in Egypt that we stand in solidarity with them and their demand for freedom."
