A Lithia man was charged with driving under the influence-manslaughter late Tuesday night after the pickup he was driving smashed into a car that burst into flames, killing the driver.
The name of the victim was not released, as Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies try to notify next of kin.
Deputies said that the 11 p.m. Tuesday wreck occurred on State Road 39 just south of Old Welcome Road.
Jeff S. Bair, 45, 18349 County Road 672, was driving a 2001 Ford F250 north on SR 39 when he crashed into the rear of the Honda. The car spun counterclockwise and caught fire as it went into a roadside ditch.
The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bair, who had refused to submit to a blood-alcohol test, remained jailed this morning. No bail was set.
