LARGO A 22-year-old mother was booked into the Pinellas County Jail Monday after her 10-week-old son ingested cocaine while in her care, authorities say.
Sharise Johnson was charged with one count of child neglect. She was being held at the jail today on $20,000 bail.
On June 9, the baby was brought to All Children's Hospital and was found to have cocaine in his system, according to an arrest affidavit.
Largo Police Lt. Mike Loux said it appeared Johnson went on a crack binge, with her child in tow. Family members called authorities from a residence, saying they hadn't seen her in a while, and when police arrived at the family's home, Johnson showed up with the child.
Johnson had left her family's home and went to the home of her estranged husband, Loux said. Investigators think the baby ingested the cocaine during a 24-hour period in which he was in the care of Johnson or Jason Barrington, 30, who was arrested Saturday.
Johnson admitted she was using crack while the infant was in her care, the affidavit said.
Barrington also told police he was under the influence of narcotics in the presence of the baby, jail records say.
"Either [the] defendant or co-defendant administered the cocaine to the infant,'' Barrington's affidavit said.
