A driver who fled after a crash that killed his passenger Friday morning in Apollo Beach had a suspended license and was under the influence, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Christopher Allen Davis, 33, of Ruskin faces a charge of DUI manslaughter after the crash that killed Robert Shaw, 43, of Ruskin.
At 7:06 a.m., a 2001 Isuzu sport utility vehicle driven by Davis collided with a 2000 Lexus driven by Megan Lawrence, 25, of Valrico, on U.S. 41 at Miller Mac Road, troopers said.
Troopers said the Isuzu was northbound on U.S. 41 in the left-turn lane and turned into the path of the southbound Lexus. The Isuzu overturned as a result of the collision.
Shaw died at the scene.
Davis left the area on foot, troopers said, but was found and detained by Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies about 45 minutes after the wreck.
Davis was injured in the wreck and taken to the Southside Medical Center in Lakeland for treatment before his arrest, troopers said.
Davis also faces charges of driving on a suspended license involving death, leaving the scene of a crash involving death and driving with a habitually suspended license. All of the charges are felonies.
Lawrence suffered minor injuries and was taken to Brandon Regional Hospital, troopers said.
Records show that Davis was arrested on Oct. 1, charged with resisting arrest without violence and driving on a suspended license. He was convicted of the charges and sentenced to jail. Records show he was released on April 20.
