A device that can be used to steal credit card information was found Sunday at an ATM machine at a local bank.
Police say customers who have used the ATM at the SunTrust at 308 W. Alexander St. in the last six months should review their accounts for any fraudulent or suspicious activity.
Officers found a scanner and camera outfitted with a remote transmitter at the ATM. These types of devices are typically used to capture the credit card and personal identification numbers of customers using the ATM, police said.
It’s not known how long the device was on the ATM.
The device, described by investigators as sophisticated, was discovered by a technician who was doing routine maintenance on the ATM, police said. The machine was last serviced six months ago, so investigators don’t know when the skimmer was placed on it, police said.
A police spokesman said the device was “outfitted with a remote transmitter that would have allowed the user to download the retrieved data without ever having to take it off of the machine.”
Anyone finding suspicious or unauthorized transactions on their accounts should contact the police Sgt. Jim Shultz at (813) 757-9200.
