A Houston Astros baseball player was arrested early this morning after Tampa police officers sniffed the aroma of marijuana coming from the ballplayer's Land Rover at a red light.
Jordan J. Schafer, 25, of Haines City, was driving a 2008 Land Rover with a Mississippi tag at 12:34 p.m. today and stopped at a red light at Columbus Drive and Glen Avenue.
The windows were down, when a Schafer pulled next to an unmarked police car. Officers in the car said they smelled marijuana and "saw the driver smoking a marijuana blunt," the report said.
Police said the driver admitted smoking the pot and told officers he had more in the console. He said the marijuana, nearly an ounce, was his. Two others in the car were not charged.
Schafer, a graduate of Winter Haven High School who was the Atlanta Braves' 107th pick in the 2005 MLB draft, was arrested without incident and charged with felony possession of marijuana. He was transported to the Orient Road Jail. Police seized the vehicle.
Jail records show that Schafer, a centerfielder with a big league career batting average of .238, was released at 2 a.m. today after posting $2,000 bail.
In April 2008, Schafer, still playing with the Braves minor league team in Mississippi, was suspended for 50 games for using human growth hormone. Schafer was traded from the Braves to the Astros in July.
