U.S. 301 reopens after fatal crash east of I-75

The driver of a pickup truck was killed when he apparently attempted a U-turn on U.S. 301 and was struck by a trailing cement truck early Thursday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Three passengers in the pickup were seriously injured in the collision just east of Interstate 75.

The wreck closed U.S. 301 in the area for about three hours.

The name of the 21-year-old driver of the Ford F350 was not released.

Amos Flores, 38, Jose Carlo, 40, and Jose Ramos, 67, were passengers in the pickup and taken to Tampa General Hospital for treatment, the highway patrol said.

The pickup was traveling north on U.S. 301 at 6:10 a.m., when the driver steered right and then sharply left in an apparent attempt to make a U-turn, said Sgt. Steve Gaskins, a spokesman for the highway patrol.

Steven Patrick, 45, of Wesley Chapel, was driving the cement truck north behind the pickup, Gaskins said.

Patrick hit his brakes and swerved but could not avoid the pickup, which turned in front of him, Gaskins said. The front of the cement truck struck the driver's door of the pickup, he said.

Patrick was not injured.
