City officials dispatched to two area businesses have found no indication striptease dancing is, or will be, taking place.
Tampa police checked out Cleo's Strip Club, at 1948 E. Hillsborough Ave.; and Club Rosé, at 3720 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., after residents complained to the Tampa City Council.
Cleo's, formerly Leo's Bar and Package Store, is advertising for dancers. Club Rosé, formerly Club Classic, has yet to open and its manager has said a sports bar/lounge — no striptease — is planned.
"It appears that they would not be eligible for strip-club status — what the city calls special cabaret — if they applied, which they have not," said Assistant City Attorney Rebecca Kert.
Kert recently provided council members with an update on the businesses.
Cleo's has a license to sell beer, wine and alcohol; Club Rosé, when it opens, may sell beer and wine as a restaurant.
Tampa police have monitored the businesses and found no violations of the city's adult-use laws.
"They will continue to monitor these establishments," Kert said.
Club Rosé's manager, Larry Gay, has said he and his wife, Robin, who recently bought the Club Classic site, are not going to open a business that would upset area residents. City permits show interior renovations are being done at the club.
Councilman Frank Reddick was skeptical about the city's report, especially regarding Cleo's. The name says it is a strip club, he said, and he continues to receive complaints from residents.
"I hope they (Tampa police) will continue to monitor and will make sure they are not doing what they say they are not doing," he said.
