Keep track of what your kids ask for so you can look for bargains later.
Look closely for deals when you're walking up and down the aisles of a department store.
Shop out of season.
These are some strategies followed by our Free & Cheap bloggers, which they shared during their weekly roundtable discussion today.
The topic: Bargain hunting.
When your kids ask for something - say, a new belt - "never rush out and grab it immediately," advises Janine Dorsey of TBO.com.
File it away instead and look for bargains on belts when you're out shopping later, she said.
Debbie Swartz of News Channel 8 said she could spend hours walking the Target store with all the deals she's sure to find there.
Same with other retailers, she said: You just need to be willing to pay close attention.
"If something says 30 percent or more off, it really does mean or more. There may a shirt in that rack for $1 or $2 if you look."
Wait a couple of weeks after the big seasonal sales push and you're sure to save a bundle, said Todd Davis of News Channel 8.
"Summer stuff is on sale; I'm already seeing stuff come in for Thanksgiving and Halloween," Davis said.
Next week, the Free & Cheap bloggers will have the first of several discussions about a time of year when Americans spend a lot of money: Back to school.
