Authorities say a U.S. Army private who tried to bring a small amount of explosives on board a United Airlines flight from Arizona to Los Angeles has been released from custody.
U.S. attorney's office spokesman Robbie Sherwood says 19-year-old Pfc. Christopher Eric Wey of Fort Carson, Colo., was detained Wednesday after Transportation Security Administration screeners at the Yuma airport found about a half-ounce of military explosives in his bag.
He was charged Thursday with attempting to carry an explosive onto an aircraft and transporting stolen explosives. Court documents say he took the C4 explosive during a recent training course and planned to show it to his family and then get rid of it.
A federal magistrate in Yuma released him without bail Thursday. His federal public defender declined comment.
