Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways launched a sale today that extends through Thursday midnight offering $40, $80 and $120 one-way fares to all of their destinations for flights between Aug. 23 through Nov. 16.
The fares are based on distance: $40 for flights up to 450 miles, $80 between 451 and 1,250 miles and $120 for flights longer than 1,251 miles.
The occasion is Southwest's 40th birthday, which actually was Saturday. Customers benefit from the sale with Southwest's acquisition of AirTran, a deal that was closed May 2, with AirTran to be phased in to Southwest's network through early next year.
Fares do not include federal excise tax of $3.70 per takeoff and landing, airport-assessed passenger facility charges up to $9, and the federal Sept. 11th security fee of up to $5 one-way.
Flights on Fridays, Sundays and four days around Labor Day and Columbus Day are blacked out: Sept. 1, 5, and 6 and Oct. 10.
Spirit Airlines' $9 club, which costs $59.95 for an annual membership, listed $9 fares each way between Tampa International Airport and Fort Lauderdale on six days in July and for $17 each way between Tampa and Atlantic City on six days in September.
Airfarewatchdog.com, a free on-line air fare subscription service with daily updates, listed $248 round trips on Delta Air Lines and AirTran between Tampa and Las Vegas.
Allegiant was offering $80 round-trip fares between St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport and Chattanooga, Tenn., $144 round trip fares to and from Allentown, Pa., and $206 round-trip fares to and from Bangor, Me.
Passengers must add taxes and fees to the prices above.
