The newly created SouthShore Chamber of Commerce hosted its first awards gala at Del Webb Southshore Falls in Apollo Beach. The semiformal event, which was catered by South County Career Center Culinary Arts students, drew more than 200 guests.

New president ushered in
The awards dinner included the installation of the new SouthShore chamber president and board for 2012. Joel Meek of All Bay Insurance accepted the gavel of leadership from outgoing president Patti Thornton of SunTrust Bank.
Recognizing leadership
Debbie Caneen, director of business development for Sun Towers, was voted Community Leader of the Year at the Greater Sun City Center Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. Caneen serves on boards for the chamber's South Shore Coalition for Mental Health and Aging and the Samaritan Alzheimer's Association. She also facilitates the weekly Slow Speed Networking Professional Referral Group. She also was recognized as a finalist for the 2011 Tampa Bay Business Journal Health Care Hero Award.

The Florida Home Partnership will present a training session on conducting a proper meeting at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Dorothy Duke Community Center, Bayou Pass Village, 2203 Dorothy Duke Lane, Ruskin.
