New faces to join HART board

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Three newcomers have been selected to join HART's board of directors, including a former Republican Hillsborough County Commission candidate who lost in the 2010 primary to current HART board member Mark Sharpe.

Gov. Rick Scott appointed Joshua Burgin of Plant City to succeed John Byczek and Carlos "John" Melendez of Tampa to succeed Alison Hewitt on the 13-member Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority board.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn has begun the process of appointing Bryan Crino to replace David Mechanik.

Burgin got tea party backing and financial support from conservative activist Sam Rashid in 2010 to oppose Sharpe.

Burgin opposed the proposed 1-cent sales tax increase that Sharpe supported. The tax was intended to provide matching funds for a light-rail route and other bus and highway transportation improvements. The tax initiative was voted down, but Sharpe won re-election.

Burgin has been the vice president of information technology and social media for the Holtec USA Corp. since 2008 and was Kazakhstan director for the International Republican Institute from 2005 to 2007 among other Republican Party positions.

Melendez, 41, of Tampa, has been an engineering consultant with CPH Engineers Inc. since 2004. He received bachelor's degrees from Florida State University and the University of South Florida.

Crino is president and co-founder of Skyway Capital Advisors LLC, an investment banking and private equity group.

He has a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Texas, a law degree from the University of Illinois, and an MBA from the JL Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
