When the curtain rises on Sebastian Hagelstein in the production of "Oliver!" he'll share the stage with some familiar faces.
That's because this community theater production will be a family affair for the 8-year-old. Hagelstein has the starring role in "Oliver" being put on by the Carrollwood Cultural Center Community Theater next week.
The play marks the first time, the center's community band, chorus and children's theater program will work together in a show. Show director Mary Ann Scialdo said the event presents a unique opportunity.
"We have multiple generations working with each other and learning from each other," she said. "The participants range in age from 8 to 93."
Hagelstein is not only excited to have the lead role but to be performing with his grandparents and cousin.
"Even my mom and dad are helping out with the show," he said.
For Jerry Myer, who plays one of the adult roles, the play gives him a chance to dust off his skills.
"I haven't been in a show since 1966," he said. "I'm very nervous but very excited."
Performer Michael McNabb said everyone walks away learning something.
"I think the children learn from the adults and the adults learn as much from the children," he said.
Rachel Saddy-Saxe, 13, said she's enjoyed working with people of all ages.
"It's been an amazing experience, and we've learned so much about working together as a group," she said.
More than 100 people are putting the production together. The cast will also be collecting donated foods at all the shows in spirit of the story. "Oliver" is the musical based on the classic novel "Oliver Twist." It tells the tale of an orphan boy trying to find his way on the streets of England.
"It's amazing how the story is still relatable in this day and age," Scialdo said.
