Three pedestrian crosswalks are proposed for the intersection of Bayshore and Gandy boulevards.
Through neighborhood feedback and information gathered by the Bayshore Task Force, the city's transportation division manager, Jean Dorzback, said it was clear pedestrian improvements were needed at the intersection.
"We are aware there have been a number of condominiums constructed in that area and no pedestrian provisions made available," Dorzback said. "We'd like to do some minor improvements to address the need and have about $200,000 to put toward improvements."
Dorzback said the plan is in preliminary stages, and city officials hope to meet with the area's neighborhood association presidents this week.
The plan could include changes to existing signals as well as the addition of countdown pedestrian signals.
Justin LaRosa, president of the Bayshore Beautiful Homeowners Association, reacted favorably to the proposal at first glance. Many people in his neighborhood regularly use Bayshore Boulevard for exercise such as walking and biking, and would use a crosswalk.
Sally Flynn, president of the Ballast Point Neighborhood Association, said about two years ago members of her association approached city officials with a list requests for the area. Pedestrian-related improvements topped the list.
"It's long overdue," Flynn said. "We were quite excited to hear they would be doing something."
