Swimmers from the South Tampa Aquatic Team scored fast swims at the 2009 Florida Swimming Junior Olympics held July 16 to 19 in Fort Myers.
The swimmers, ages 10 and 11, competed against 49 other teams and 800 swimmers with qualifying times at the long course pool at Florida Gulf Coast University. The eight girls representing the team were Toni Gaertner, Haley Hanlon, Abby Kynes, Madison McLean, Anne Myers, Martha Pointer, Sarah Rossi and Sierra Terrana.
Swimming in individual and relay events, the South Tampa swimmers had a number of strong swims and personal best times. Even with a relatively small team, they came in 19th overall in the girls division at the prestigious annual state meet for swimmers age 14 and under, sponsored by Florida Swimming.
"I'm very proud of all the girls for their hard work and commitment," team coach Todd Hoffmeier said. "They swam their hearts out and put everything they had into each race."
