The threatened eviction of tenants from a mobile home park is on hold after an attorney sent a sternly worded fax to the park's managers.
St. Petersburg lawyer Cary Cash said he spent hours on the phone with a representative of the park's owner and secured a number of concessions. First and foremost: No immediate evictions.
"I would hope that the landowner, under the circumstances, would provide a professional - I wouldn't say courtesy - but just a reasonable time frame for this entire community to relocate," Cash said today.
On Wednesday, tenants at the Tampa Sun Mobile Home Park on North 47th Street received written notices giving them two days to pack up and leave.
The park has 43 mobile homes and is valued at nearly $1.2 million, according to records. The value of the property alone is nearly $500,000. About 25 mobile homes are occupied.
Calls to the park's Hollywood, Fla.-based owner have not been returned.
Cash said the owner's representative would not say why Tampa Sun is closing.
Cash, who is handling the tenants' case for free, plans to spend the weekend hashing out an agreement to present to tenants early next week. He hopes park management will offer tenants at least two weeks of free rent.
Tenant William Smith said he's happy at having more time to find another place to live but still angry at being put through so much turmoil by park management.
"It's terrible," he said.
