City water officials are rerouting traffic off northbound North Boulevard between West Park Avenue and Columbus Drive following a water main break. City crews are on the scene preparing to repair the line, said Elias Franco, spokesman for the city of Tampa's water department.
All lanes of Amelia Avenue, between North Boulevard and Massachusetts Avenue are closed. Southbound lanes of North Boulevard remain open.
The break occurred this afternoon on Amelia Avenue between North Boulevard and Massachusetts Avenue. It is a 24-inch main, Franco said.
As of 6 p.m. Tursday, the city had not issued a precautionary boil-water order because no households had confirmed a loss of water pressure, Franco said.
However, residents might see brown or discolored water while repairs are in progress, Franco said. To clear the discoloriation, residents may flush their water pipes by opening the tap on their bath tub or kitchen sink and allowing water to flow until it is clear.
Residents living east and west of Amelia Avenue might experience the brown water because the line runs east and west, Franco said. He didn't know how large of an area the main break would effect.
Franco said it may take until late this evening or early Wednesday morning to complete the work. Water officials would have a better idea of the damage, and what repairs are needed, after the crew gets to the pipe.
