Voters will elect a new representative for state House District 58 in a special general election today.
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Democrat Janet R. Cruz, Republican Hunter Chamberlin and write-in candidate Jose Vazquez are vying for the seat being vacated by Rep. Michael Scionti, D-Tampa. Scionti announced in December that he had accepted a job with President Obama's administration.
The district covers largely Hispanic West Tampa and Town 'N Country as well as Egypt Lake, Seminole Heights, Sulphur Springs, Wellswood and the West Shore business corridor.
Special Democratic and Republican primaries in January drew about 3,200 registered voters among about 34,000 eligible Democrats and 14,000 Republicans. The turnout was among the lowest in county election history.
About 15,000 more registered voters will be able to cast votes today. They were registered as other than Democrats or Republicans and could not vote in the closed primaries.
For information about the election, call the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Office, (813) 272-5850.
