The Saint Leo men's basketball team is looking to move into the top half of the Sunshine State Conference standings, but they'll have to do it against the reigning top team in the league this weekend.
The Lions (8-6, 2-2 SSC) are facing Rollins today at 4 at the Bowman Center, the second game of this weekend's co-ed conference doubleheader.
The Tars have dominated the Lions in recent years and boast a 3-1 league record and 10-4 overall.
But Saint Leo enters with momentum, having edged longtime-rival Florida Southern 60-57 on Wednesday inside the Bowman Center.
Dominick Robinson hit a 3-pointer with 0.6 seconds left to break the tie and finish with a team-high 16 points.
Robinson's off-the-bench performance allowed the Lions to overcome a dismal shooting night and 20 turnovers.
But they also benefitted from Florida Southern missing 10 of 18 free throws in the game.
Today's game could prove even more pivotal because of Saint Leo's upcoming schedule, which takes them on the road to face Eckerd and Nova Southeastern in the next week.
Women lose 8th straight
After winning the first six games of the season under new coach Nikki Jessee, the Lions' are in free fall after yet another double-digit defeat, this time to Florida Southern 59-44 on Wednesday.
Of SLU's eight consecutive losses, seven have been by 10 or more points and three of those have been by 25 or more, and the future appears no easier as they face traditionally tough Rollins today at 2 p.m.
The Tars are 12-1, 4-0 in conference play, while Saint Leo is the only team without an SSC win thus far.
Chelsea Williams has been one of the few bright spots for the Lions, but she was held to 11 points in Wednesday's defeat to the Moccasins. Williams is averaging 12.5 points and 6.4 rebounds.
Swim teams dominate quad meet
The men's and women's swim teams captured 17 of the 18 events at their own Saint Leo Relays last Friday, a quad meet against Pfieffer, Wheeling Jesuit and Lake Erie College.
They will return to conference action today with a dual meet against Florida Southern in SSC action.
