Mike Holmes hadn't picked up a guitar or a Bible for quite some time until about four years ago.
In the years leading up to his father's death in 2005, Holmes faced personal turmoil and financial ruin and was at times, he said, lost.
But as he stood in front of his father's casket, he had an epiphany.
"It was like I had a blood transfusion," said Holmes, who decided then "to find my way back to the Lord."
During the past four years, he has made it a mission to strengthen ties with family and friends and to share his Christian convictions through fellowship and song.
Aside from opening his horse farm once a month for country gospel gatherings, he uses a home recording studio to help local musicians spread their wings. He's writing a book about five miracles he personally experienced.
And in conjunction with his career as publisher of Horse 'N Tack magazine, he has formed a connection with "cowboy churches," unique ministries across the country that reach out to cowboys, farmers, ranchers and the like.
Some of the cowboy churches he publishes free listings for in Horse 'N Tack invited him to visit their organizations in other states. They encouraged Holmes to expand his monthly publication beyond the borders of Florida.
The future of print publishing is uncertain, but Holmes believes that his paper-and-ink product will thrive.
"Within two years, this is going to be a national publication," he said. "In man's economy, it doesn't make sense, but we're dealing in God's economy."
