Cigar lovers on cloud 9 at Ybor City festival

No, it wasn't more early morning fog you spotted over Centennial Park.

It was the smoky haze of the 11th annual Cigar Heritage Festival, which drew aficionados of all things stogie to the Ybor City park today.

The festival, a fundraiser for the Ybor City Museum Society, included an attempt by local cigar maker Wallace Reyes to earn a Guinness World Record.

Reyes hoped to complete assembling a 180-foot cigar - a project that took 18 months of planning and 102 hours of labor. The cigar weighs 112 pounds and is as long as 2,000 regular cigars end-to-end.

An official from Guinness was on hand to verify the attempt.

Reyes previously held the record when he and his wife, Margarita, completed a 101-foot cigar. But Jose Castelar of Havana, Cuba, completed a 148-foot cigar in May 2008.
