When Sweetbay Supermarket cashier Betty Davis looked at 9-month-old Osiris Morris, who was sitting in a shopping cart, she remembered the time when his mom, Tiffany, was the one gazing up at her.
Davis, beloved icon in the Plant City grocery business, recently marked her 50th year behind a cash register. She has rung up groceries for generations of shoppers, including children who have grown up to be customers.
In between rings, Davis, affectionately known as "Miss Betty," reminisced of a time when Tiffany was a child who sat in a shopping buggy seat.
"Now I'll get to watch him (Osiris) grow up. I've watched the whole family grow up," she said.
The children who have grown up with the 69-year-old Davis say they have never stopped looking up to her.
"She was here when many of these customers were kids. Now they are adults and have kids of their own," said Jay Antle, assistant manager of the store, at 507 S. Wheeler St.
Davis doesn't anticipate retirement.
"Looking back, I did not plan to last 50 years. I'm sure of that. I don't think I had a goal. It just swept me away."
