When deciding on a fundraiser, Junior Achievement leaders decided it was time for a breath of fresh air.
Instead of a stuffy banquet, the economic education organization is planning the Suncoast Sprint 5K Run and Walk. The event's proceeds will support business programs in area schools.
The event is Saturday at the Rotary Pavilion on State Road 52 near the Suncoast Parkway, chairman Greg Giordano said. The sprint concludes with lunch from Pit Boss Bar-B-Q.
"Rather than going for expensive black-tie dinners, we, as a board, wanted to do something that is more accessible to most people as well as something that is fun, instead of sitting around hearing people speak," Giordano said.
Giordano also hopes the fee for the race might be more affordable than a banquet. Registration is $25 for the 5-kilometer race. The Kids Fun Race, for ages 12 and younger, is $10.
The fun race starts at 9 a.m. Awards will go the top boy and girl in three age categories, 6 and younger, 7 through 9, and 10 through 12.
The 5K begins at 9:45 a.m. Awards will go to the top man and woman with the best overall times, plus awards for the top finishers in eight age categories.
