St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster on Thursday sent the Tampa Bay Rays a proposed amended draft to the current stadium use agreement asking the team to consider property in the Gateway area near the Howard Frankland Bridge.
The amended agreement would give team officials permission to discuss a new stadium with city officials but limits sites to St. Petersburg and the Gateway area.
The amendment clearly states club officials can talk only with St. Petersburg and its representatives.
Rays majority owner Stuart Sternberg said last month that he wanted to look at sites for a future ballpark outside of St. Petersburg.
"Since we are both obligated to the existing Tropicana site through 2027 season, an amendment is appropriate, and is the first step in this long process to secure the future of Major League Baseball in Tampa Bay," Foster wrote.
"I trust that this meets your approval, but if not, then kindly advise at your earliest convenience," Foster wrote.
Rick Vaughn, a spokesman for the Rays, said the club has received the mayor's letter.
"We will review it in a timely manner and respond directly to his office," Vaughn said.
